HISTORY

Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Michigan Association (FAAMA) formally started in February 2015 but builds on past work which began in the early 1990s through a group called the Food Allergy Michigan Network. Over time, this group expanded into phases which culminated in a state based professional nonprofit educational organization entitled Food Anaphylaxis Education, Inc. (FAE). This organization produced professional health education programs on IgE mediated food allergy and anaphylaxis to professionals and the public. Another FAE focus was partnering with state organizations associated with Michigan schools to introduce methods to safely accommodate students with food allergies. FAE also was instrumental in collaborating on successful state legislative initiatives such as securing legal coverage for students in Michigan to self-carry epinephrine auto-injectors. Although FAE was legally dissolved in the summer of 2003, FAAMA recognizes the dedication of those who contributed to FAE strategic planning. Their efforts serve as a strong foundation for the present and future work of FAAMA. We thank the following individuals who donated many hours of their expertise at a time when the diagnosis of IgE mediated food allergy was less prevalent but still potentially life-threatening. We acknowledge their unique historical perspective and accomplishments in advancing public education and awareness of the existence and seriousness of food allergies and anaphylaxis.
